Ontario has the highest number of positive HIV test reports in Canada with a total of 23,305 (1985- 2002). Quebec has the second highest number of positive test reports at 11,845 and B.C. at 11,147.

In 2002 there were 1,143 positive HIV tests reported in Ontario: an increase from the 911 cases reported in 2001.

It has been estimated that 6,708 people have died of HIV/AIDS-related illnesses in Ontario since 1977.

Men have accounted for 87% of all positive HIV test reports in Ontario. Women have accounted for 13% of all positive HIV test reports.

Mode of HIV Transmission

  • Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) 70%.
  • Injection Drug Users (IDU) 8%
  • Heterosexual contact 10%

Most Recent Trends (Jan. 2001 – December 2001)

HIV infection among women has been steadily increasing over the years. Women account for 26% of adult positive HIV test reports.

  • People from countries where HIV is endemic 8%
